Recently having 2 rp54xx server in our office that is using HP StorageWorks 2405. Notice that there is this process "dm_ses_enclosure" is taking up almost 100% cpu util. My guess of this process is for hardware monitoring, but my question is why is this process can take up almost 100% of cpu util ? Can I kill it ? How do I kill it ?

CPU TTY PID USERNAME PRI NI SIZE RES STATE TIME %WCPU %CPU COMMAND
1 ? 2565 root 233 20 4228K 636K run 16408:37 99.13 98.95 dm_ses_enclosure

There isn't a symptom for your problem.
Try updating the patch appropriate to your OS with STM version A.3800

hpux11.11

http://www1.itrc.hp.com/service/cki/patchDocDisplay.do?patchId=PHSS_28622

hpux11.0

http://www1.itrc.hp.com/service/cki/patchDocDisplay.do?patchId=PHSS_28621

Revert on the same

What you could do is to de-activate some of the monitoring for this equipment. There could be different types that you could remove from EMS, information, minor warnings etc. Use the '/etc/opt/resmon/lbin/monconfig' program. You can activate and de-activate a variety of monitors. Definitely have the latest diagnostics/patches/HWE (hardware enablement patches loaded)

Thanks ALL,

This is what I have tested in both server.

First of all, by running the "monconfig" to have a complete shutdown of all the event monitoring. It does work and all dm_* has been killed in the system.

Secondly, apply the patch PHSS_28622, the cpu util for "dm_ses_enclosure" has gone down to 0.0xx%.

Just an update on "dm_ses_enclosure", it go up to 100% when this happens, it turns from monitoring to "NOT MONITORING"

>/storage/events/enclosures/ses_enclosure ... NOT MONITORING.
(Possibly there is no hardware to monitor.)

There is a new known problem in A.38.00 with dm_ses_enclosure, which is what you are seeing.

This is documented in CR JAGae67279 and occurs on both HPUX 11.0 and 11.11.

The problem applies on systems with DS2405 (A6250A, codename Apex), but only if both controllers from one device are attached to the same system. The problem is not seen with only one controller connected, or with DS2300 devices.

If A.38.00 has been installed and the problem is encountered, use 'swremove' to remove the OnlineDiags, and install an earlier version (e.g. A.35.00, HWE0212) plus the latest patch for that release.

The patches to fix this problem will be available in the next couple of weeks:

HWE0303 (A.38.00):

PHSS_28956 11.00
PHSS_28957 11.11
