Try to boot off the old kernel as suggested, and have a look at the entries in /etc/shutdownlog, /var/adm/syslog/OLDsyslog.log and the log files /var/adm/sw

You might also get the crash dump analysed if you have it.

I hope that you created an ignite tape before installing the patch. I would be restoring off the tape and attempting to find out what went wrong. Always create ignite tapes before any patching, even ones that don't require a reboot.

Regards
Michael
"When I have trouble spelling, it's called fat finger syndrome"

Hi
Not sure if it will be much help but a system panic ususally writes an error code into the /etc/shutdownlog. That usually gives some clue as to the what has caused the panic. Is there any crash dumps?

Cheers
Con

Okay,

Check the configuration of this file

/etc/rc.config.d/savecrash

Make sure the control variable is set to 1 and the location has plenty of space.

If its already set, you have a crash dump already.

It is in /var/adm/crash

If there are subdirectories, you have a crash.

Run q4 analysis and upload the result here or to HP support, you'll get hooked up.

Dump analyis instructions are attached.

Alternative:

swconfig \* > /tmp/swconfig.txt

Upload that, but look at it first. Check the install state of the patch you installed.

If its corrupt, swremove the patch.

swremove PHNE_28538

You can attempt another installation if you want.

Hopefully you did this patch by itself and nothing else on the system is dependent on it and it can be backed out.

Check the patch notes on itrc.hp.com and make sure reinstall won't make things any worse.

if it can be reinstalled, swinstall -s /tmp/PHNE_28538.depot or wherever it actually is.

if it requires a boot.

swinstall -x autoreboot=true -s /tmp/PHNE_28538.depot

mB, did you notice you got a congrats thread.

Nice headgear dude.

SEP

Hi

Can you boot to single user mode and have a look at the log files?
I'd also have a look through Chp4: System Recovery in the "HP-UX Software Recovery Handbook" as it might give you a few ideas. My thoughs would be to interrupt the boot & try to boot using different options such as alternate kernel, LVM maintenance mode etc. At least you might be able to eliminate a few things as being the cause.

Cheers
Con

Yes, before you can do anything I said above, you need to boot to your previous kernel.

Sorry.

restart the system, even if that requires the power switch.

Interupt at the 10 second prompt.

Bo <ENTER>
Interact with the IPL(ISL?) Y

hpux /stand/vmunix.prev

Now you can follow the directions above.

If you have crashdumps analyze them, but get that patch the heck out of there if you are SURE thats the problem.

SEP</ENTER>
