"NFS getattr failed" - while using cifs client

We have a share from a win2000 svr that is being mounted on an hp-ux 9000 server running 11i. All was going well then all of a sudden the mount point was no longer there and we could no longer connect to the win2k share using the same mount point. I did notice right before it happened that we were having fairly significant network traffic on the hp-ux server on the mount point. After further investigation, I uncovered in the /var/opt/cifsclient/core directory there is a core file. There is also another file that has a bunch of cifs info including the following:
rlp.rlim_cur 2147483647
rlp.rlim_max 2147483647
Looks like we may have hit some type of limit. The challenge is I am not able to clearly identify how to resolve this. I have done the following:
- checked forum and found a similar post
entitled "cifs client cannot mount w2k
folders"
Our symptoms were similar to this one,
however this person wound up rebooting the
server to clear issue. I could do that but
I still want to address the bigger issue
since I don't want this to happen again.
- made sure we had latest nfs patches esp.
phkl_25652
- will be sedning core dump to hp for analysis

Does anybody know what parameters refer to this? I did see mention of maxdsiz and maxssiz but not sure if they are the right ones and if so what to set them to. Any help would be greatly aprreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

you might have hit these parameters.
As these paramters directly involved with samba operations.

maxfiles
Soft file limit per process
maxfiles_lim
Hard file limit per process

Try increasing the above kernel parameters.

Thinking out of the box,

somebody has changed ( decreased )the resource limits for root user using ulimit command as root.

somebody has changed the permissions of the win2k directory which is shared, in online. Or have changed the user passwords or user rights related to that share.

Consider the possibility that someone changed perms on the w2k box.

Don't consider NFS patches. CIFS is a different product and no NFS patch will help with it.

Consider upgrading to the latest CIFS/9000 version.

At this point I would not consider dinking with the kernel. I see no evidence that any limits have been breached.
