It depends on the type of codeword.

CD codewords are tied to the specific CD number, machine codewords to enable things like Online JFS are tied to the machine ID.

Some third party codewords are tied to the IP address.

Hi John,
Thanks for the speedy reply!
Of course we have many codes in .codewords!

What I'm worried about is, when HP compiles them do they use anything that ties in the NIC, hostname or domain name?

Thanks, joe

To quote Bill Hassell from some months back:

"The license codes are usually tied to the ID number of the computer so the codes can't be used on another machine. There is no method to extract the codes as they are enabling strings and don't need to be stored. Instead. a flag is set that the application has been unlocked when the license code is entered."

No points for me, please.

For the HP Codewords that unlock applications on the HP Application CDs, they are tied to the machine's ID number, found with uname -i. So changing NICs or host or domain names won't affect those applications. However, there are other license managers that may indeed use the MAC address of a NIC or the hostname. When you buy software and it requires a security code, it is a very good idea to write down the details on how to install it and then ask the vendor what changes will require a new security code.
