Hi,
On my box (C3000) with HP-UX 10.20 I've installed a Veritas Netbackup Client (version 3.4GA) Our Policy consist of a weekly Full and a daily incremental. Backup are correctly made, but every Full leave a problem: for every user it is impossible to login the message is "NO SHELL"; NFS file systems are correctly exported..."just" login, telnet, rsh... don't work. To work again I have to "hard" reboot the machine and all works fine... until next full.
Anyone has some idea about that?

Thank you
Romano

no shell ist typically a problem of wrong permissions and/or ownership of the root filesystem

I do not know Netbackup, does it fool with directory permissions or ownership while doing a backup??

Regards,
Bernhard

Hello Romano,

this reminds of a bad night I got paged for several 10.20 boxes no longer accessible. The reason was that our backup people had installed (and started) Veritas Netbackup without checking the patch level before...

The notes I found about it say that HP and Veritas suggested the patches PHKL_16751 and PHKL_20356 to be installed. These are for sure superseeded by newer patches by now, so you better check yourself.
In general you should have the latest vxfs patches and query for patches related to veritas netbackup.

I remember that one of the dependency patches (PHSS_19739) made it necessary to relink oracle. So it's good to read the patch notes...

Applying the patches solved the issues completely for us (well, it didn't make the 10Mb NICs faster... :-)

Carl Martell
