With this 715, I was trying to copy the disk. I did a backup to dds with ode>copyutil a while back. Today the system turned up its toes, wouldnt boot. Oh well, lets try again to copy the dds backup to a bigger drive (4.5gb vs 2gb). After a couple of tries that got disk write errors on 2 different drives, I though this is odd. I opened the case, anb the cpu sink was too hot to hold your hand on. Left it open for a while, tried the restore again, worked fine. Now boots ok from new disk. Problem- have ~4gb disk, with a 2gb / file system on it - how do I get it to see the rest of the drive? No PV or LV on it. Also, I have a second 4gb drive, HP firmware, but copyutil refuses to see it, as does COPY (disk to disk). extendfs ???
TIA,
jp

copyutil does a raw dd from tape <-> disk so you are stuck with only 2Gb usable out of 4Gb (basically its been formatted to 2Gb).
The only way to fix it is now backup to tape using ignite, then boot from tape and reinstall as Ignite will allow you to pvcreate (format) the drive so you can use all 4Gb.

Copyutil is not designed to copy back to a larger disk than was backed up from. Ignite is.

A lot of the older workstations, especially those with cpu upgrades, suffer from excessive heat. We had one we had to leave open and have a large fan blowing on it to stay cool enough to stop it crashing! Nowadays you can buy PC fans around 4-6inch which you can connect up to your workstation and stick onto the heatsink and these are enough to stop it overheating and crashing. Weve upgrading some this way.
Stefan,
thanKS FOR THE BAD NEWS...How can I get ignite installed then? I have heard this before, but havent been able to find enough info to install ignite.
I did format this drive when it was giving me write errors due to heat, but apparently this didnt help.
thanks,
jp

You can download and install ignite for 10.20 here;

http://www.software.hp.com/products/IUX/index.html

All you need is a DDS tape drive to backup to (or an ignite server across the network but this a lot more difficult to setup). Then you can boot from the DDS drive and use the tape you created to reload HP-UX and reformat the whole 4Gb disk so you can use it all.

You can this ignite command (or something similar) to make your backup;

/opt/ignite/bin/make_tape_recovery -a /dev/rmt/0mn -I -v -x inc_entire=vg00

Even though you formatted your drive to fix write errors copyutil does a raw dd on it when you restore which puts its own (2Gb) format on your disk - negating the format you did before.
I would be concerned about the hot drive. Larger disk drives did not exist when the 715 was designed and there just isn't enough cooling available inside the case for bigger and faster drives. You can always add a bigger disk(s) externally.

Ignite/UX will allow you to copy your VG00 to another disk regardless of size and even spread the data across multiple drives.

I have downloaded 2 different Ignite depots from hp, 25 and 53Mb. Tried swinstall on both, both give me 'no compatible products found' or similar msgs..uname -a gives B.10.20.
larger file was
Ignite-UX-10-20_B.4.3.123_HP-UX_B.11.00_32+64.depot
swinstall recognizes it and analyses, but says nothing compatible???
Any ideas please?
TIA,
jp

You need the 'A' version of Ignite/UX for HP-UX 10.20.

Hmmm....I just checked the web site and apparently since 10.20 is no longer supported, they have pulled the 10.20 version of Ignite.

Hey HP....Put it back will ya.....Some of us still need some of the 10.20 stuff!

If you have a set of application CDs for 10.20, you might check on them and see if it is available on them. It is a free product so it won't be codeword protected.

Patrick,
I just checked, and the small file I have is the A.3.7.95 version, which should be ok. It gives me 'not compatible with target' message when I try to install it???

Am I missing something else here?

TIA,
jp

A.3.7.95 has 2 versions, one for 800's and one for 700's. Sounds like you have the 800 version and you need the 700 version. Either try to find the 700 version or email me and I will email it to you.

Cheers,

Stefan
stefan_farrelly@ipcmedia.com
