Splash screen.

Yesterday I was able to get help in setting up a modem on my L2000 w/HP-UX 11.0 for which I am very thankful. To day I have a related question sort of.

When we logon to my server a splash screen with the name of my company shows up with the login under it. My problem is that I don't know where that is located so that I can have the splash screen show up when I connect to the server with the modem.

Any ideas are welcom.

The file is /etc/issue

/etc/inetd.conf telnet daemon must be set up to push a splash screen at login.

telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/lbin/telnetd telnetd -b /etc/issue

save it.

inetd -c

As mentioned by SEP aove, /etc/issue is where to look. You might also want to check out /etc/motd and /etc/copyright too.

I checked the inetd.conf and it had the telnet line already. I then compaired the inetd.conf on this server with my older server, which works, and they look almost the same.

What else should I do?

When using /etc/issue - do not put a welcome message i.e. "Welcome to ABCD PLC" as there has been a case where a hacker got away with it because his defence was "It said welcome so I presumed I was". The judge being not exactly computer literate dismissed the case.

Also do not announce the OS as this again gives the potential hacker more information.

Your etc/issue could contain something like this

-------WARNING------
YOUR CONNECTION TO THIS MACHINE
WILL BE MONITORED AND RECORDED.
UNAUTHORISED USE OR OVER
AUTHORISED USE OF THIS SYSTEM
IS FORBIDDEN.

I have already setup my telnet users to have this splash screen show up when then connect to the server. I just got my modem setup and want to use the same splash screen when someone logsin via a modem.

I just dont know where to make the change to get the splash screen to show up when using a modem.

is this a joke or is this the reality of American jurisdiction?

I cannot believe he got away on this grounds.

Btw, you don't have to be a hacker to find out with a great probability what kind of OS your target of attack is running.
Tools such as nmap will give you this info.
