What is the actual PROBLEM here?

Is the problem that the VG didn't mount, and your application is DOWN.

Or is the problem that you are getting a bunch of warning messages because LVM can't find the Alternate Links to the primary volumes?

If it's the latter, then you don't have much to worry about. PowerPath doesn't play well with Alternate Links. LVM is telling you he can't find them. Just remove the alternate links and the warning messages will go away. You don't need alternate links with PowerPath.

If the problem is that your VGs won't mount, then you have trouble.

Is this a Symmetrix or Clariion? Is the attachment fibre or scsi? If fibre, what sort of zoning do you have in place? And if fibre, what does fcmsutil -stat return?

mark

Stuart,

The vg mounts and the app is fine. So yes, the problem is the messages, but we've been told by some sources that they are a problem, to the point of keeping OpenView agents from installing on the system.

EMC's powerpath install & admin guide says these messages are normal and to be expected on CLARiiON, but I have yet to hear them say they're ok on a Symm.

How do I go about removing them (what commands) as alternate links? And we're sure at that point that PowerPath (the name DOES seem to suggest that :)) will handle to pathing?

Thanks.
