      <description>For disk drives, you can use "bdf" command which shows the number of free disk blocks but I don't think that HPUX offers commands to check out availability on DLT, DDS tape itself.</description>

      <description>For disk (as mentioned), bdf shows free space for mounted volumes.  For tapes, there is no realo way to determine free space on a serial device, especially with compression. The tape has a native (uncompressed) capacity and you might use the 'typical' value of 2x the capacity for compression but this will never be realized with random data.&lt;BR /&gt;</description>
