Mike,

The 11.0 version should work for you. You will probably have to change the swinstall options to allow incompatible software.

Pete

Hi Mike,

As noted, the 11.0 version runs just fine on 11.11
But you should be aware that the gzip ver included in the OS is in /usr/contrib/bin.
Whereas the Porting Center version will install into /usr/local/bin by default.
There are several ways to deal with this:

1) Adjust paths such that /usr/local/bin is searched *before* /usr/contrib/bin so that the system will find the 1.3.3 ver first.

2) Remove base version & install Port ver normally - then create links from /usr/contrib/bin -> /usr/local/bin

3) Port Center version IS relocatable. So redirect the install to /usr/contrib/bin
This is the preferred way to handle this as Ignite MUST find gzip in /usr/contrib/bin to work properly & I wouldn't trust links to be correct in all Ignite scenarios.

On a related side-note.
We submitted a JAG to HP months & months ago & have requested escalation several times as well, because it's way WAY past time for HP to have solved this silly little problem.
gzip 1.3.3 has been available for a VERY long time, yet HP still ships 1.2.4 to this day.
make_net_recovery is essentially useless IF you end up with an archive > 2Gb.
Come on HP - get off your duff & do something about this!
There, I feel better now...

Rgds,
Jeff

On that note (or better on these notes):

1. The gzip available on https://www.beepz.com/personal/merijn/ or http://www.cmve.net/~merijn/ for 10.20 and 11.00 is newer: 1.3.5 and is a binary only (no swinstall), so you just put it over the existing version and your problem is gone

2. When will HP start supporting CD-ROM (or DVD) ISO images for ignite? Most of my systems don't even have a tape anymore!

Enjoy, have FUN! H.Merijn

Hi Merijn,

Yes, I understand & agree with you that simply laying the binary down wherever you wish is easy & location-controllable.
But our team is responsible for hundreds & hundreds of servers, so we really need to have installs registered in the IPD for version control & ease of checking such.

Having enjoyable fun,
Jeff

P.S.
The need is there - but not huge.
I'd like to see it out there so I can use it as leverage to pressure HP further to update their distributions.
To be clear

1. HP has *NO* influence on what the HP porting center's port and make available
2. HP only has a say in the matter to which system / OS they port
3. I already have ping'ed Mehdi
4. What HP ships with the OS / Application CD is completely decoupled from the HP porting center's activity. Mehdi might expand on this if he likes to join this thread. I've mailed him the link.

That being said, I'm a kind of porting center myself :)

Now if I got 1 point for every 100 Mb downloaded from my site, I'd be Olympian.

Enjoy, have FUN!
Hi Mehdi,

Good to hear from you & thanks for getting gzip 1.3.5 out on the Porting Center so quickly.

I understand that gzip 1.3.3 is still beta & 1.3.5 is in development, but what about 1.3.1?

It's been on your site for almost 2 years. Is it still considered beta? I searched the gzip.org page, but could find no version history for it. gzip 1.2.4 has been released for over 4 1/2 years. I have a hard time believing that there have been no further stable versions in that time period. And considering 1.2.4 is anything *but* stable when dealing with archives > 2GB, I would consider the term somewhat oxymoronic.

Our problem is that because Ignite uses gzip in the make_net_recovery process, the product is essentially useless when dealing with archives > 2GB. And in our 11i development & test environments today, with the myriad number of 3rd party applications required - far too many to list here - our vg00 VGs almost always grow larger than 2GB. I suspect I am far from alone in this frustration.

And I do realize that you folks are not connected to HP & we Admins out here certainly owe you & your team a debt of gratitude. Keep up the great work - we sure appreciate it.

Best Rgds,
Jeff
