Susan,

I am assuming when you are talking that you brough it into single user mode you did a init S . Unfortunatly this does not bring the system into a "true" single user mode. You will need to reset the system. Interrupt the boot process. Interact with the ISL and do a hpux -is .

This will bring the box into a true single user mode were the only that is mounted is your / and the possibly the kernel.

Since lvextend and extendfs are in /sbin you should have no problem at this point extending /usr .

After you extend it do a init 3 (or whatever our default runlevel is) and you will be back in business.

Al Smith
Sr. HP-UX Adminstrator
Quest Diagnostics

Make an ignite image of your root volume group. reinstall it while expanding /usr.

you should make an ignite image anyway before
installing 11.x.

Also,I think it's better to do a cold install of 11.x. ( that's just my opinion)
Please don't try to upgrade from 10.20 to 11.00! Do yourself a favor and do a make_recovery first (under 10.20). Take a few extra backups of the non-root stuff. Then do a cold install of 11.00.

1. Shutting "down" to single user mode will not unmount /usr,/var etc.,
2. Bringing "up" the system to single user mode will do.

Boot through ISL>hpux -is

This will bring up the system into single user mode. Then you can use /sbin/lv* commands to extend the file system.

-Sri

Hi Susan,

There has been many postings made into the
forum in regards to 10.20 to 11.00 upgrades.
You will find that it is a very difficult
upgrade and in nearly all cases has not
worked at all. The majority of people in
here do advise that a cold install will
work much better if the right precautions
are taken. From personal experience we have
had around 20 attempts and no success.

Make at least two copies of your vg00
volume group. To do this make sure you
have ignite installed. If you haven't got
it you can install it from CORE OS CD,
applications CD or download it from:
http://www.software.hp.com/products/IUX/download.html
To make the ignite tapes:
/opt/ignite/bin/make_recovery -ACvd /dev/rmt/0mn
(it is important to use the no-rewind device
or the image to tape will fail.)
Make normal backups of the other volume groups.
Take an export image of each of the other volume groups by running this for each group. (replace the volume group with your vg name)
vgexport -m vg01.mapfile -p -v -s /dev/vg01
Copy these files to another system for safe
keeping. There are obviously other files that
you will need to make a copy of, but they will
be on your ignite tape anyway.
Do your cold install of HP-UX 11 and then using
the map files from the vgexport import the
remainder of your volume groups and you are
basically finished. Your existing applications
should run without any problems on HPUX 11, but
will run in 32 bit mode, even if you install the 64 bit version.

Good Luck
-Michael
