EMS is Event Monitoring System. It's an excellent too and it can be very useful to find the alarms proactively. It can monitor a variety of subsystems like CPU, memory, disk etc., and log the errors. You can customize it to send emails or to a log file etc.,
Once EMS is installed use the utility "/etc/opt/resmon/lbin/monconfig" to customize it.
Following is the document on using EMS.
http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/B7612-90015/B7612-90015.html
Thanks for the info. I'm already partially familiar with EMS. Unfortunately, we have many system administrators, and somebody has reconfigured our machine so that EMS is not working.

We don't know what we did. I want to reinstall EMS, but I have an rx5670.

I see that EMS comes in a bundle for the 9000 series, but what about our rx5670?

Can I reinstall EMS without reinstalling HP-UX??

Hi,

Yes you can.
EMS is a product contained in the OnLine Diagnostics. And yes you can reinstall that anytime & no it does not require a reboot.

Rgds,
Jeff
Ok. Where do I get the OnLine Diagnostics disk?

It looks like you can get an EMS bundle for 9000 series systems. Will this work on an rx5670?

This may not be your problem,
but you can find the tools you need to start the resmon system all in
/etc/opt/resmon/lbin

From there you could start the emsagent.
But usually you run monconfig, and enable monitoring from within the menu.

To enable resmon start by init at runlevel change, have a look at
/etc/rc.config.d/ems
/etc/rc.config.d/emsagentconf

EMS comes with the default install of HP-UX 11.22 on the rx5670.

It used to work fine. One of our engineers shut down a lot of services to comply with company server configuration policies. He doesn't remember everything that he changed.

It's starting to look like I may have to reinstall the OS.

If you want to reinstall EMS, you should be able to mount the Core OS CD, invoke swinstall, and select 'EMS' from the list of applicaitons. If it is already installed, you may have to set the 'Reinstall even if same revision exists' (or something very similar) to TRUE.

I don't see a need yet to reinstall the OS.

If services were disabled in /etc/inetd.conf, you might check and see if the 'registrar' service is enabled or not. If it isn't, re-enable it, restart inetd (via 'inetd -c') and then see if you can start EMS.

Ok. One of our engineers identified a line in /etc/inetd.conf that was commented out.

#registrar stream tcp nowait root /etc/opt/resmon/lbin/registrar /etc/opt/resmon/lbin/registrar

It looks like EMS is working again. Did we miss any other flags?
