The base OS has no tools to deal with fragmentation that I know of. You can periodically back up the filesystem and run newfs.

I don't think fragmentation is a huge problem with vxfs/JFS filesystems, but you'll get debate on that topic.

OnlineJFS comes with a defragmentation tool. Since our order has not gotten to us yet, I don't know how to use it. OnlineJFS costs bucks but its worth it.

SEP

With HFS you don't have to really worry about fragmentation until the drive reaches 90% capacity.

With JFS, things are not quite so easy. In general, it acts the same as HFS, but it can fragment more than HFS even when not full. If you paid for Online JFS, you can use fsadm in a cron script everynight to defragment extents and directory entries (without unmounting). You can eve run reports to see what is fragmented. But this is only if you've paid for OJFS. The base JFS that comes with the system will not do these things.

HTH.

Trevor,

Here's the script that I use for nightly defragging (assuming you have OnlineJFS):

for i in `bdf -l |grep -v Filesystem |awk '{ print $6 }'`
do
if [ $i != "/stand" ]; then
echo "Re-Org'ing " $i
fsadm -F vxfs -d -D -e -E $i
fi
done

Pete
