The really really simple way is to run "sam" and select printers and plotters.

It's quite a simple job, particularly if they are network connected. On the other hand, if you have other systems printing to these devices it's best to set up the print queue on one machine and all other machines using remote printing to the first machine.

Thanks for your response, I have gotten that far. I am trying to "add Network-based printer/plotter from the SAM and I am getting the error message "The HP Jetdirect printer software is not installed on your system (neither the command "/opt/hpnpl/admin/hppi", nor the command "/opt/hpnp/admin/jetadmin" exists). Therefore ,it is not possible to add a printer that is connected to an HP JetDirect interface. Were do I get HP Jetdirect software? and how do I configure it?

Hi Tom,

you should check if you have hpplotter in your /etc/hosts. Then try a ping to hpplotter.

Regards
Volkmar

Looks like you haven't set the hpplotter up as a printer yet. Now you have the software and are sure you can ping the printer try setting it up in SAM.

"lpstat -t" will show if the printer exists and is enabled and is accepting connection.
