The backup takes long time, and finally got the error message.
any idea what causes the problem, and how to resolve it?

Check your network connection,
Check for the CPU usage on the system the
backup runs.
what is the backup software you use?

Netbackup is very sensitive to networking changes. Even if you don't use /etc/hosts for anything else, you need to have a valid one for netback that includes the local server name, the netbackup master server and any other servers your hp machine will backup.

Your /etc/nsswitch.conf file will need to fail over to /etc/hosts(maybe required).
