Nothing in that directory is "critical". You only need those files if you wanted to rollback to a previous patch.

Hi

In case you're not aware look at using the cleanup command in future.
Example
# cleanup -c 2
(Committs all patches superseeded twice)

This is designed to cleanup the /var/adm/sw/save directory properly.

Cheers
Con

Its used with swremove and other rollbacks.

When disks were smaller copying /var/adm/sw/save to tape and removing it was common enough. And as long as you have it on tape it shouldn't be an issue.

But why blow it away? Are you that short of disk? Mistake? Got a make_tape_recovery backup?

Everything under /var/adm/sw is SD-UX specific. And only problem would arise with a non-bootable kernel requiring you to swremove patches. 99% this would be recently installed. But once in awhile HP will recall a patch.

No, it won't cause a crash or any problems in & of itself.
But you're screwed if a patch gets recalled & you have to remove it. Not gonna happen.

There are reasons to make recovery tapes - THIS is #1.

Cheers,
Jeff

Removing the files without using the cleanup command may leave the patch state of your machine undefined. Hopefully you made a backup of that directory prior to removing the files. If you are successful in adding a new patch, then you should be OK. Otherwise, you may never be able to add new software or patches using swinstall. /var is crucial to the system and should be at least 1000 to 2000 megs in size but managed regularly. If you were to remove everything in the sw directory, I know you'll never be able to run swinstall again, not sure about sw/save.
