hello admins,
I came across a wierd problem to which i couldn't arrive at any logical conclusion.I installed hp 11i oe with default file sytem sizes, which alloted 400mb for root volume(/dev/vg00/lvol3).after installation since i had no licence for online jfs and desired to increase the size of root volume to 1 GB,I tried a rather circumvent method.the procedure is as follows...
i) I created /dev/vg00/lvol9 of 1GB using sam utility with vxfs.
ii)I used lvchange on lvol9 for making it contigous and disabled bad block rellocation as was the requirement for root volume
iii)then i used lvlnboot and set the root volume to /dev/vg00/lvol9,the boot, swap, dump was left unchanged.

i crossed my finger and rebooted the system....well what did i find? ....some garbage was thrown on to the screen after efi and hpux prompt were passed and it literally failed to boot.
though i was spared of the prank because the project was at the initial stage...but, still i was not convenienced of the server behaviour.logically it sould have booted properly.i am still in the dilemma as to why it didn't boot and were i had gone wrong.

can anyone enlighten me in this regard...

senthil

The /, /swap, and /stand filesytems need to be contiguous and in that order. Hopefully you did an ignite save prior to the changes and you can simply reboot from the tape and restore.

mark

Youre dead. I believe the boot lvols including swap must reside in the first 2GB of a disk. You have moved it to a part of the disk past the first 2GB so it wont boot.

Youre facing a complete reinstall - then you can set lvol3 to whatever size you want.
Sorry to say this, but it is time ot re-install and rethink your lvol sizes first.
Hi,

The root file system doesn't need to be large. We have a production server with 32GB and the root file system is only 86MB.

Just my 0.2Cents
