console echo's the passwd

Got a 700/96 console that is echo-ing the passwd. This includes the root account
Have gone into the term config and whatever I try doesn't work. Even tried power-cycle the console.

Look at the function keys on the console. I suspect that there wil be an asterisk by MODIFY ALL. Hit F2 to clear the setting, and your problem should go away.

If the earlier posting does not resolve it maybe worth :

Checking the characteristics of the /dev/tty device file major & minor numbers etc , if suspect recreate. crw-rw-rw- bin bin 0x000000

Also fyi : when using the LOGON= option of the START command in an AUTOBOOT file,passwords are displayed to the console during the startup process.....

The following is a list of the boot options:

Last config group used by START: CONFIG
Logon=AUTOSTRT/pass2.CONSOLE/pass1

NORECOVERY MULTIUSER
MULTI-DISC SYSSTART

The workaround, of course, is to not put the logon into the autoboot
file, and force the operator to log on manually.
