What's that mean ?
And where i can find a detail doc for syslog.log, including detail explanation for any possible message there ?
Thanks !

Jan 7 15:41:55 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.21.0.0.8.3 sdisk
Jan 7 15:41:55 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.21.0.0.8.4 sdisk
Jan 7 15:41:55 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.21.0.0.8.3 sdisk
Jan 7 15:41:55 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.21.0.0.8.4 sdisk
Jan 7 15:41:55 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.21.0.0.9.7 sdisk
Jan 7 15:41:55 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.21.0.0.10.0 sdisk
Jan 7 15:41:55 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.21.0.0.9.7 sdisk
Jan 7 15:41:55 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.21.0.0.10.0 sdisk
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.22.0.0.8.3 sdisk
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.22.0.0.8.4 sdisk
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.22.0.0.8.3 sdisk
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.22.0.0.8.4 sdisk
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.22.0.0.9.7 sdisk
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.22.0.0.10.0 sdisk
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.22.0.0.9.7 sdisk
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.22.0.0.10.0 sdisk
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.21.0.0.8.3 hsx
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.21.0.0.8.4 hsx
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.21.0.0.9.7 hsx
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.21.0.0.10.0 hsx
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.22.0.0.8.3 hsx
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.22.0.0.8.4 hsx
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.22.0.0.9.7 hsx
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.22.0.0.10.0 hsx
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.21.0.0.8.3 hsx
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.21.0.0.8.4 hsx
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.21.0.0.9.7 hsx
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.21.0.0.10.0 hsx
Jan 7 15:41:59 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.22.0.0.8.3 hsx
...
...
...
Jan 8 08:50:19 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.21.0.0.8.3 sdisk
Jan 8 08:50:19 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.21.0.0.8.4 sdisk
Jan 8 08:50:19 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.21.0.0.8.3 sdisk
Jan 8 08:50:19 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.21.0.0.8.4 sdisk
Jan 8 08:50:19 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.21.0.0.9.7 sdisk
Jan 8 08:50:19 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.21.0.0.10.0 sdisk
Jan 8 08:50:19 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.21.0.0.9.7 sdisk
Jan 8 08:50:19 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.21.0.0.10.0 sdisk
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.22.0.0.8.3 sdisk
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.22.0.0.8.4 sdisk
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.22.0.0.8.3 sdisk
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.22.0.0.8.4 sdisk
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.22.0.0.9.7 sdisk
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.22.0.0.10.0 sdisk
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.22.0.0.9.7 sdisk
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.22.0.0.10.0 sdisk
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.21.0.0.8.3 hsx
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.21.0.0.8.4 hsx
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.21.0.0.9.7 hsx
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.21.0.0.10.0 hsx
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.22.0.0.8.3 hsx
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.22.0.0.8.4 hsx
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.22.0.0.9.7 hsx
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/10/0/0.4.22.0.0.10.0 hsx
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.21.0.0.8.3 hsx
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.21.0.0.8.4 hsx
Jan 8 08:50:23 srs075 vmunix: 0/12/0/0.5.21.0.0.9.7 hsx
...
...
...

Hi,

Normally you only see those messages in syslog when you reboot and your system's kernel does a hardware scan.
Do you reboot frequently? It would be strange becouse the syslog is rotated normally when you do.

Gideon
From the release notes for secure path for 3.0 A
An ioscan results in numerous entries in the syslog.log file. The number is
proportional to the number of claimed LUNs. Operations or applications that
perform periodic ioscans may result in a very large syslog.log files

There's also reference to these in the Secure Path Installation Notes:

Could this be relevant ie the system is connected to a disk array and secure path is installed/configured ?
If the system was booting at the date/time stamp seen above it is normal to have that ioscan output in syslog, you can check /etc/rc.log for boot date/time stamps to verify if that is true.
TÂ

I know if I reboot the system, there will be those messages, but I haven't rebooted the system for a long time, and there is no other message(like hardware detection, services down&up) in the syslog around these messages showing system was rebooted by someone else or system itself.
I am the only one who has root access, and I didn't run 'ioscan' and didn't cron any job to run that.
I notice that these messages being added to syslog.log had different time periods.
So, what else ?
Thanks !

Are you using OVSAM to make SAN configuration changes? If so, then this is normal.

Changes to the
SAN configuration cause notification events to be sent to interested
devices such as FC controllers.

This in turn will cause the HP-UX kernel to re-probe the hardware
connected to the controllers and print this type of message to the syslog.

Geno

In the above examples the ioscans are happening during office hours. Have you looked at the other messages? For instance grep on a single hardware path to see all instances of that device being seen and you can see at what times this occurs. It might help you find the source of this issue.

(Perhaps some monitoring script or something like that?)

monitoring:
0,5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50,55 * * * * /usr/lbin/sa/sa1
but i think that's something like 'sar'. And I schedule this on other machines, no such messages appear on those boxes. So, I don't think the messages due to this. And also, I cron this each 5 mins, but those weird messages appeared at the time unpredicatble.

So, any other suggestion ?

Like I stated previously, something is happening with the SAN itself which the HP server thinks a change has occured which causes the HPUX kernel to reprobe the hardware. Check to make sure that your EMC or XP 512/1024 (whatever type of disk array you have) isn't haveing some type of issue.

Run a dmesg and post the results from that just to see if there are any messages that might be helpful. Also check the disk array itself to make sure the FC controllers are reporting fine.

Geno

another thing is that SAN is not under my control now. Do you mean someone else changing the config on SAN will make HP-UX generate these messages ?
Thanks !

Dmesg is just reporting the same messages syslog is showing.

Yes, If changes are being made on the SAN then the HPUX kernel reprobes the hardware, which is what you are seeing in syslog and this is normal. Now if a hardware issues exists on the SAn (say a FC controller is acting flaking) then it could cause the same thing to happen. I would check with your SAN folks to make sure all is well with the array. Good Luck!

Geno

But i checked syslog.log and dmesg, no error related to this...
so, any other idea about this ?
Thanks!
