to extend an HPUX root filesystem you should be using ignite. If you have free extents on the disk. Run an ignite backup to tape. Boot from tape. Resize any filesystem you want as long as there is enough space, then let ignite lay the information back down. Are you using ignite?

if you hope to extend lv execpt /,you can boot to single mode, then you can umount filesystem,if you want to extend /,you must use the ignite to make recovery tape, use this tape to boot, then you can find a interface, you can change the size of filesytem.

Actually you can extend any logical volume other than /, /stand and primary swap as they are to be contiguous. For them, the best way is to use ignite tape.

As mentioned, *reboot* to single user mode. You will need to mount /usr to get /usr/sbin/lvextend and extenfs commands. Else you can use the commands from /sbin too. If /dev/vg00/lvol6 is the logical volume for /var, then you would do the following.

1. Interact with ISL while booting.

ISL>hpux -is

2. Once you are in single user mode, verify /var's logical volume by doing a

grep var /etc/fstab

3. Extend /var's logical volume.

lvextend -L 1500 /dev/vg00/lvol6

1500 is the new size in MB.

4. Extend the filesystem

extendfs /dev/vg00/rlvol6

5. Mount /var

mount /var

6. Verify the size

bdf /var

7. Get into multi-user mode

init 3

-Sri
