Hi everybody,

I have a workstation running HP-UX 11i. There is a process called dmisp that is taking up > 99% of the processor time. The user says the ws isn't running particularly slowly, but I would like to know what the process is and why it is using so much resource.

I've compared it with another ws that is running slowly. On the slow one dmisp is only using 0.21% of cpu, so I suspect it's not a great problem, but if anyone can put my mind at rest I'll be grateful.

Mark Syder (like the drink but spelt different)

This process seems to be part of data collection process for the DMI (Desktop Management Interface). I don't know too much about this but I would suspect that you are collecting information, perhaps running Insight Manager or something like that and it is reporting an error condition continually which is not being addressed.

What kind of monitoring/management tools are you running. Possibly restarting them might help.

Thanks Mark/Hemanth.

This has given me a general idea of what DMI is, but I'm certainly not convinced I need it.

The version of DMI is out of date, so I would be grateful if a DMI expert out there could convince me that it's worth upgrading. At the moment we're using Big Brother which is only reporting one fault on that system - CPU overload caused by DMISP!

At this stage I'm tempted to disable it unless someone can give me a convincing reason to persevere.

Mark

Mark,

I've routinely disabled DMI since the Solaris CERT came out:

http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-2001-05.html

There's also something for Compaq Insight Manager:

http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/908611

I don't use DMI and after two issues, I'm not comfortable with it. I've encountered no issues from disabling it (but I also disable SNMP because we have no sanctioned and controlled tools to catch traps).

I seem to recall having seen the same odd behavior of dmisp before I turned it off.

HTH,
Mic
