file clean up

How about this for a hint to have users clean up their files (or is it an incorrectly set kernel parameter?):

Spirit began acting up last week, when it stopped sending data and began rebooting its computer, eventually resetting it roughly 130 times. At one point, the rover thought it was the year 2053, Trosper said.

To tame Spirit's computer, engineers temporarily disabled its flash memory. Engineers believe they gave Spirit too little random-access memory, or RAM, to adequately manage its file-packed flash memory, which is similar to the memory used by digital cameras to store photographs.

Cutting off the flash memory eased the burden on Spirit's RAM and ended the rebooting loop that had plagued the spacecraft, Trosper said.

Engineers planned to begin deleting this week hundreds of unneeded files, stored in the months since launch, to make the memory more manageable for the rover's RAM, Trosper added.

SEE - I told them to use a LINUX kernel. But - NO - they said Bill G. gave them a price they couldn't refuse on a MicroSlop kernel.
Serves them right I say!

Hopefully they won't delete the kernel.

Getting a Support Media disk there for repair is going to be a REAL problem.

Actually, they use a Real Time Operating System called VxWorks.

Yes, and if they installed OVO - they could have monitored the fact the the file system was almost full. :)

Maybe they need a cron job to delete the old files!

gives you comfort doesn't it..

My nuts are on the line if I get a diskspace error.. These dummies phucked nearly a billion dollar project by pinching pennies and being to lazy to script and cron some cleanup..

Amen on rocket science.. jeezus..
