Thank you ALL for your replies and help. I appreciate all the help I get from this forum.

I am attaching the output from the commands you suggested.
On our HP-UX 11.00 server, hardware model 9000/800/L2000-36: I am trying to extend the logical volume of or /var partition. Here is what I do:

I reboot the box, and boot into single user mode. Then I execute the following commands:

# vgdisplay
vgdisplay: Warning: couldn't query physical volume "/dev/dsk/c1t2d0":
The specified path does not correspond to physical volume attached to
this volume group
vgdisplay: Warning: couldn't query all of the physical volumes.
--- Volume groups ---
VG Name /dev/vg00
VG Write Access read/write
VG Status available
Max LV 255
Cur LV 8
Open LV 8
Max PV 16
Cur PV 2
Act PV 1
Max PE per PV 4350
VGDA 2
PE Size (Mbytes) 4
Total PE 4340
Alloc PE 2681
Free PE 1659
Total PVG 0
Total Spare PVs 0
Total Spare PVs in use 0

vgdisplay: Volume group not activated.
vgdisplay: Cannot display volume group "/dev/vg01".

# lvdisplay /dev/vg00/lvol8
lvdisplay: Warning: couldn't query physical volume "/dev/dsk/c1t2d0":
The specified path does not correspond to physical volume attached to
this volume group
lvdisplay: Warning: couldn't query all of the physical volumes.
--- Logical volumes ---
LV Name /dev/vg00/lvol8
VG Name /dev/vg00
LV Permission read/write
LV Status available/stale
Mirror copies 1
Consistency Recovery MWC
Schedule parallel
LV Size (Mbytes) 1152
Current LE 288
Allocated PE 576
Stripes 0
Stripe Size (Kbytes) 0
Bad block on
Allocation strict
IO Timeout (Seconds) default

#
# lvextend -L 2560 /dev/vg00/lvol8
lvextend: Warning: couldn't query physical volume "/dev/dsk/c1t2d0":
The specified path does not correspond to physical volume attached to
this volume group
lvextend: Warning: couldn't query all of the physical volumes.
lvextend: Not enough free physical extents available.
Logical volume "/dev/vg00/lvol8" could not be extended.
Failure possibly caused by strict allocation policy

#

I believe we have hpa fibre channel cards in the server, but the /var (or /dev/vg00/lvol8) partition is not located on a networked drive/storage...
Hi Cameron,

You've got a failed disk in the vg00 mirror - c1t2d0.
Look at the vgdisplay output - it shows 2 For Current PV & *only* 1 for Active PV.

You should get it replaced & the mirror resynced before you do anything else. You lose the other disk & you're going down.

Rgds,
Jeff

Cameron,

All the error messages are indicating that at the moment /dev/dsk/c1t2d0 is unavailable for what ever reason.

Try a:

diskinfo -v /dev/rdsk/c1t2d0

to see if the O/S can get any info about the disk in question.

An ioscan -funC disk |more

will show which controller the disk is hanging off. If it is a scsi controller, then it is unlikely that it is network based. (More servers will boot from local drives, using mirrored disks on C0 and C1)

If ioscan shows NO H/W then you have a probable hardware fault.

Are the disks hot pluggable? If so this can sometimes help. Before you do this, are you sure you've got a good backup? (A paranoid just in case).

Hot plug the disk, do an insf -e -H (h/w path of disk controller).

You may have to call out an HP engineer.

Good luck
