IGNITE

Hello all, I have a IGNITE make-recovery tape and I am unsure of its integrity. I have never used IGNITE before. I assume you interupt the boot and boot from the dds. Does it boot to a menu, or automatically boot IGNITE? Can I try it on another HP box?

It depends on how you created the tape. If you used make_tape_recovery and used the '-I' option then it will boot to a menu. If you did not use the '-I' option then you will have a chance to interrupt the install and go to the menu (one of those "Press any key within 10 seconds" type things). If you do not interrupt at that point then it will automatically start installing from tape.

I *ALWAYS* include the '-I' in my make_tape_recovery command line just to be safe. I don't ever want to boot from the tape and have it install somewhere I don't want it to and screw something else up.

It boots to a SD-UX install type menu. You can try it on another box, though for best results, the box should be similar in configuration.

You put it in the drive and then interupt the boot sequence as you say. You then either "bo " if you know it or , more likely, do a "sea". This will search for bootable devices and put a little "Px" next to it where x is a number. Then go "bo Px" replacing x for the number that corresponds to your tape drive (sequential access device). Say, "N" to "Interact with IPL" and the tape will boot.

If the tape was created with "-i" it will stop an let you change things. If it wasn't you'll get a few seconds to interupt it but it will ask you nicely.

Yes you can test it on a another machine, if you don't mind tyhe fact that it will re-build that other machine.

Hi Rich,

Ignite allows you to recover from a tape. During boot you have the change to enter into an interactive restore (you can modify file systems size, ...) or to leave it non-interactive (system will be recovered as it was when make_tape_recovery was made).

Of course, you can boot another system from that tape media but, if it is not exactly as the target, ignite will enter in non-interactive mode or even will not boot if system has a complete different architecture (different PA-RISC processors,...).

Depends on how you created your recovery tape, the operation will defer. If you have included -I option with make_recovery command (for interactive recovery), then it will allow you to change the setting before it the actual recovery process. Otherwise, you will have an option to interrupt the process in between and you need to act at that time.

The best way to test the integrity is to test it on a similar system. Also, make_recovery is old now, so use the newer version make_tape_recovery:
