Support for optimze Kernel and System

Hi,

we need support for optimize the Kernel and find errors in HP-UX. We have no software-support, but need to pay much more for a person how realy know HP-UX11. Is there someone in Germany (Hamburg). We have to rebuild our IBM-AIX-Software for HP-UX. But the HP-UX works like Windows."Do you have reboot today?" We know our software, but dont understand all of the kernel parameter (AIX don't need it!) Is there someone who can help?

An excellent document which defines the HP-UX kernel parameters is this one:

You will want to use SAM to examine and to tune your HP-UX kernel. You can run it as root from the command line. From the main menu presented, choose Kernel COnfiguration -> Configurable Parameters.

There are various templates to start with for database servers if this is what you have to tune.

SAM is the best way to approach changing kernel parameters because SAM is "aware" of the various interrelationships among them. Using SAM to tune the HP-UX kernel results in the most optimal choices of parameters. You will also see that changing one parameter often cascades to changes in others.

This forum also has some excellent suggestions. Do a search on "tuning", "kernel" and "oracle" for lots more information.

If you are not aware of 'Glance' you should be. Glance is a performance measurement tool which is worth its weight in gold. You can load a trial version from the Application CD(s). If you like it (I'm sure) you can license the product. It has builtin help to guide you, gives all the high-level metric summaries and drill-down you want. Glance also the utilization values of a few kernel parameters like 'nproc', 'nfile', 'shmmni', 'semmni' and a few others.

James has really given you good links. You can try out using this sample Kernel configuration that my server is using for oracle 8.0.5. The server is K580 running 10.20. You should have a swap that is upto 3Gb and RAM above 1Gb.

This depends on what applications are running, how many users will be using the system , how much RAM/CPU's will be in your machine etc.. From the AIX box you can compare the common kernel parmameters ( lsattr -E -l sys0) ? i.e. dbase if so , if you go into sam , kernel parameters section , you get a template of kernel parameters settings depending on the environment you are running and then from these you can tailor the ones required as suggested by the application i.e shared memory , swap mem set to 1 ,nproc etc..

You may also need to look at how your Logical Volumes are set up i.e. striped , raw. The type of disk technology you will be using i.e. SCSI / Fibre )
