You need to have STM (Support Tools Manager) installed. If you have an X display device then start xstm otherwise start mstm for a terminal interface. You then select the device and Invoke Tools->Information->Run.
The 'Firmware' that is greyed out is a tool to update firmware; you don't want that. The Tools->Information->Run will produce a log file that should display 'Software Revision Number' and 'Software Model Number' -- these refer to firmware. I don't have a box with that card in it but I'm sure that those values are displayed.
Clay/sevi,

I'm not so sure stm will give you that. I don't have any XL2 cards either. But this is what I get from an A5158A Tachyon:

-- Information Tool Log for Fibre Channel Interface on path 1/4/0/0 --

Log creation time: Mon Apr 5 15:33:47 2004

Hardware path: 1/4/0/0

Product ID: Fibre Channel Interface
Hardware Path: 1/4/0/0
Module Type: Bus Adapter
Vendor ID: 0x103c
PCI Device ID: 0x1028
PCI Subsystem Vendor ID: 0x103c
PCI Subsystem ID: 0x6
Topology: Direct Fabric Attach (N_Port to F_Port)
Channel N_PORT_ID: 0x662113
N_Port Port World Wide Name: 50060B0000070A42
N_Port Node World Wide Name: 50060B0000070A43
Tachyon TL/TS Major Revision:2
Tachyon TL/TS Minor Revision:3
Memory Address Base: 0xc9fbf000
ROM Alternate Addr Base: 0xc9fc0000
Lower I/O Address Base: 0xfe00
Upper I/O Address Base: 0xff00

To me that looks exactly like the output from the fcmsutil command.
I *think* I remember soemone posted this question quite a while back & the answer was that you had to query a specific register or address on the card, but I'm not positive.

Rgds,
Jeff
Jeff/Clay:

That is exactly wat i get when i query the card using STM tool.. the fields are the same as what Jeff posted.

sounds like tachyon is the touchy one here.

You are probably right; again, I don't have one to test. You could simply look in the patch database and install the latest firmware -- if it exists.
Hi Guys,

I just bounced this question off one of our friendly CEs who happened to be here on another matter & to the best of his knowledge there is no FW on the fibre channel card. The driver is essentially the FW for the card. He says they've never had a util to load FW on fibre or any PCI SCSI HBAs for that matter. Said they used to have FW for SCSI, but just for HSC & HPB bus type cards, but never PCI.

SO I'd say the key here is to stay current on the fibre channel driver & I know for a fact that the fcmsutil command WILL report that.

Later,
Jeff
