K class, A3404A fc card, and 11i

I'm trying to install a A3404A fibre channel card into a K260 in the core i/o slot running 11.11. But, with the card installed I get a hpmc error:

boot
: disk(....)/stand/vmunix
ddddddd + dddddd + dddddd start 0xdddddd
hpmc
your system just crashed

Well, I was hoping for something better as the system boots just fine without the card installed.

looking at other forum threads, it does seem this should be supported. Am I wrong on this?

the one thing that i see that is unusual is that the kernel parameter num_tachyon_adaptors isn't in the kernel. This is in the manual for setting up on a 11.00 system. So, should the parameter be there on 11.11 also?

After doing some searching through information I had gathered for an installation of this card into a K220, it seems that your PDC version is not up to the correct level. The PDC version should be at 41.33.

I don't know if this will help you, but the 3404 cannot handle switched fabric - only point to point.

it does seem like the hardware is supported and should work with give the proper software.

Michael Craig thanks for the information. It is still good to know if I should get the new cards. But, the pdc firmware would only be necessary for booting from the fibre channel card

Jeff Schussele, i know the limitation of the older card, but i'd still expect the system to boot without crashing what every it is connected to. At the moment, it isn't connected to anything.

back to having the correct software installed. anyone have a suggestion about the kernel parameter, num_tachyon_adaptors, not being present?

According to the hpux server configuration guide july 2002 , that I have , it says , FC cards A3404A and A6685A , for K class is supported in the HSC slots but not in the optional core I/O slot .

If you have this guide, see page 6-79 .

No, that won't be necessary.

I installed the card in a K420 in a expansion i/o slot with the same result, an hpmc error crashing the system at boot. system had the same software, but not quite as uptodate on patches.

I was able to get a second A3404A card to test with. the second card works just fine. My original problem must be a bad card.
