add in os

useradd username

set a password

smbpasswd -a

Done.

You will of course need to make sure the user has appropriate groups and permissions to actually access anything.

Another way - if you are using NT to authenticate - then you can use a username.map file. If you have multiple users - but they don't need an Unix account - then create a generic Unix account first, then in the /etc/opt/username.map file:

unixgenricid = ntuser1, ntuser2, etc

I'm assuming you installed HP's Samba - CIFS server.

Also, look at SWAT - point your web browser to http://yourunixserver:901/

There's some excellent online documentation there.

Also - for NT authentication and username.map - add the following to smb.conf:

security = SERVER
encrypt passwords = Yes
password server = ntdomaincontroller1, ntdomaincontroller1
username map = /etc/opt/samba/username.map

Thanks, i created new user in samba.But first time ask username and password in NT side,second time it goes automatically without username and password.how it is possiple to go without password and username.

hello suresh,

Once you login to samba server with appropiate username and password,the authentication is valid for the entire login session.that is you can use the filesystem and other services hosted by that samba server till you log off from the your client machine.

If you need to login into samba server with different user ID you need to logout forjm the currrent user session from your nt machine and re-login.

Though i can't assure you cent percent...There might be aremote chance that a parameter defined in /etc/opt/samba/smb.conf that might help you ask for authentication after stipulated amount of time...though it does not solve your problem....

Hi,

When you connect with NT to a Samba share it automatically sends your NT username and password. If these authenticate correctly then you won't be asked for a password, otherwise you will see the password prompt.

In order to authenticate without typing in a password you need to have the NT password the same as the Samba password. You can do this either by manually changing the Samba password to match the NT password (and ensuring that the username is mapped too), or by configuring the Samba server to use the NT PDC to authenticate. This 2nd method is documented under server security.
