I don't really know why, but I started nis.server again and stopped it again..and the logon is better now..
the other day I noticed NIS was running, and not being used, so I stopped the service..then I noticed the logon hanging??
in nsswitch.conf, there is no passwd entry, I am using files then dns for hosts.
should I add an entry for passwd?
I am using 10.20, I have heard in 11.0 there is an entry for passwd.
I am not very familiar with NIS, anyone have any ideas as to why this happenned, I would really appreciate it..thank you.

Kevin,

Check if your hostname resolving is oke.
nslookup hostname, is it using nis or dns or hosts file.
Also check if there is no corruption in the passwd file.

Good luck
Hi,
What do you mean by NIS is off, were you using NIS and now not?
If so it could be related...
what is the order of resolution in /etc/nsswitch.conf
is passwd files?
to be sure if you dont need DNS name resolution try to rename /etc/resolv.conv and try again.
Keep us informed

Good luck
Victor

Check and make sure ypbind is not running. If it is, kill it and you should be able to login.

Berlene
