You may need to execute fsck on these filesystems in single user mode.

RG.

In case you see login prompt and you are trying to login as root, still not able to login then:
Either you have forgotten the passwd or somebody by mistake changed it.

In that case, you need to plan for downtime, reboot the server.
Halt it at pdc prompt.
Main Menu>bo
Interact with IPL --> y
ISL>hpux -is

this will take you to single user mode without prompting for password.
after you see # prompt simply change the password.

# passwd
New Password:
#shutdown -r -y 0

Allow it to boot to normal multiuser level and see if it works.
If you can connect via telnet, login as root
find processes running on console
(ps -tconsole) and kill them.
Possibly other than getty some thing else
also be running.
After killing all the processes, check getty
is running again. Then try from console.
If this doesn't solve your problem some thing
wrong with the terminal itself. Reset to
factory defaults and comminication settings
to match the current getty values.

If you can connect through telnet with same
password, I don't think rebooting in single
user mode and resetting password will help!!

Or simply try a reboot without resetting
password.

TT

What type/model is the console? Is it a 700/92 or 700/96 style console?
If so, power it off, depress the D key, and while continuing to keep the D key depressed power the terminal back on. After a few seconds it should beep, release the D key, an dthe terminal should display a meesage about using defaults.
See if you can now get a logion to work.
