Hi,

ioscan scans system hardware and coulkd spend some time to answer.
Try to use the option -k that scans kernel I/O system data instead of the actual hardware: this way the response should be faster

federico
Can someone please help me out here? I'm using HPUX 11 on a HP Visualize Workstation. When I run the ioscan command the result will either take a lifetime to come out or the terminal just hang up. Can someone please tell me what's the problem?

Hi Kevin,

ioscan -fun would simply report the kernel's knowledge of all your devices and associated device files without scanning the hardware, thus a lot faster. Only the usable devices are listed, i.e. those having a kernel in the driver and an instance number.

As the scan is done at boot time, the result of 'ioscan -fun' will be accurate unless you've added/removed a device, or one of your devices is lacking a kernel driver.

Best regards,

Dan
FYI, the reason it is probably taking so long is that for each SCSI address (yes that means 8 for single ended and 16 for Fast/Wide) it wait 10 seconds for it to time out before moving to the next SCSI address. A single Fast/Wide card takes 160 seconds (well 150 and a smidge cause the controller will respond) if there is nothing hooked up. Multiply this by all the SCSI cards in your system and that could be a big number. <G></G>

There is no problem, just the way ioscan works.
To reduce the wait, the guys have given some excellent suggestions.

Nabeel
