Hi,

I am afraid I didn't understand your question properly. Base VxVM (Veritas Volume Manager with limited functionalities) does only come with HP-UX 11.11. If you are planning to install Base VXVM product of HP-UX 11.11 on to HP-UX 11.00 I am not sure if it will work.

-Karthik S S

Not totally sure of your premise for the question...

HPUX offers vxfs filesystem with JFS Online software...and advanced features if you have the license for it using the "fsadm" tool...

I doubt you can get anything for free from HPUX or Veritas, but vxfs does come with HPUX.

Sorry bro.. A year ago, I had 2 brand new systems installed, a Superdome and a Keystone which didnt have VXVM on them... only Online JFS and vxfs...and they were both loaded with Mission Critical OS as well. Which "gives you everything" that is included for free, so to speak, that HP offers.

Might be a new offer, but I am not aware of it.

Sorry ..for getting confuse ,

There is no inbuilt VXVM features for any version of HP-UX , as i found from the following site ,
http://www.software.hp.com/RELEASES-MEDIA/latest/osoe/11i/1202.htm

It supports ignite-UX for VxVM , that made me confused. And it is available from 11i.

Here is the detail ,

"
HP-UX 11i Operating Environment for December 2002

Ignite-UX has been updated to version B.3.8. This latest version includes changes to support VxVM on root file system and changes
to make_*_recovery. This VxVM feature is only available by selecting this option when installing your system from the Sept. 2002
release of the 11i OE media or from Ignite depots based on this release. For more information on these changes and others can be
"

Thanks to all who replied.
R Veri,

With HP-UX 11.0, you will need to purchase VxVM. With HP-UX 11.11 (11i), the "base" version is bundled even with the Foundation OS as an alternative to HP's LVM. What can you do with the base? Practically a lot already in a "free" product -- among other things - You get Mirroring for Free (but only on your rootDG or OS disks)!

A couple of moons ago, VxVM was touted to replace LVM. It still is.. in fact rootability (OS disk encapsulation/boot) has been supported since early 2002. Patches still do come out and support for EVA/SecurePath is coming along. Bottom line - if your array disks are already PATH protected (SecurePath) -- you won't need the full license to make good use of VxVM.. and do away with LVM..

What is ahead? It may be that HP may no longer bundle VxVM with HP-UX. It's rumoured that HP-UX 11.11 V 3.0 will get Tru64's VM and Filesystem -- to make the OS "friendly" with the EVA (HP's own enterprise array).. That'll make Vilume Management on the HPUX side obsolete IF using EVA's/HP's storage -- sizing the LUNs on the array also sizes the filesystem.. neat huh?

As a sidebar: People mostly get confused with VxVM and VxFS(aka Online JFS) .. both are Veritas products, On eis Volume Management Product -- the other is a Filesystem product..
Todd.. in case you don't know. VxFS is HP-UX's ONLY enterpise class Filesystem.. JFS/Online-JFS IS Veritas Filesystem (VxFS).. Unless you want to run hfs/ufs on HP-UX. you have no choice but to use JFS (aka VxFS)... now don't say another option would be to use raw -- which is NOT a Filesystem ;^)

AFAIC.. VxVM is still the best volume management software out there - if you have a disk team, they bring there skills from platform to another (Solaris, HP, AIX, Linux even Windows...) And no hardware agenda...

VxVM is available on 11.00 purchased from Veritas. A newer version of VxVM has been included for 11.11 without charge. Like LVM, certain advanced features are extra cost. VxVM from 11.11 is not backward compatible with 11.00 and will not load. 11.00 is very mature (it's getting old, Nov 1997) so very little work is being done for enhancements.

VxVM is a volume manager, just like LVM. Neither VxVM or LVM know anything about filesystems and indeed, raw and swap partitions with either volume manager have no filesystems. HP-UX has two filesystems, HFS (seldom used) and VxFS. While VxFS is a Veritas product, it has no relationship or connection to VxVM or LVM. VxVM is provided on 11.11 (and higher) for customers that are already familiar with the Veritas product.
