    <description>Hi,&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;I'm running daily sar scripts to create a sort of performance baseline. from the past I have some parameters to trigger but don't know how the figures are for a HP900 Rp5470 4meg 15k disks:&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;trigger values:&lt;BR /&gt;sar -b %wcache (&amp;lt;40?) &lt;BR /&gt;sar -c scall/s (&amp;gt;1000?)&lt;BR /&gt;sar -d %busy (&amp;gt;50?) avserve (&amp;gt;45?)&lt;BR /&gt;sar -w swpot/s (&amp;gt;1?)&lt;BR /&gt;sar -q runq-sz (&amp;gt;2?)&lt;BR /&gt;sar -v proc-sz, inod-sz, file-sz (&amp;gt;0?)&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;What are valid values for the rp5470?&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;your input pls.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;t.i.a.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;John Destreel</description>

      <description>John,&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;There is nothing as valid kernel values for rp5470. Kernel tuning is about tuning it so that application/prgrams/database that you run on ths system give optimum performance.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;How did you arrive at the values, that you have given.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;With write cache rate of less than 40 %, there is certainly a root to lower the buffer cache. If you are rnnning database like oracle which does it's own cacheing through SGA, you do not relate the OS buffer cache for oracle. Also for the run queue, if you have 10 cpus, and run queue is more than 2, I do not think that it is a problem.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;So what you run on the system, and what performance it gives is important before you tune the kernel.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Anil</description>

      <description>Ok, thank you all for replying.&lt;BR /&gt;I've been out so i'm a little late in responding.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;The values I mentioned are from a past far far away (10 years). Don't know the exact hardware/software anymore.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;For now it's about:&lt;BR /&gt;- 1 cpu&lt;BR /&gt;- 21 oracle instances (including OEM)&lt;BR /&gt;- 5 sets of mirrored disks (15k)&lt;BR /&gt;- 3 gigabyte aggregated nics&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;What are the valid figures?&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;TIA&lt;BR /&gt;John Destreel&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;</description>

      <description>As others have already stated, there are no specific tuning values for the rp5470 or a specific set for Oracle.  If you ask 100 performance consultants for an ideal kernel parameter list you'll get back 100 different answers.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;The best advice I can offer is to read some of the performance tuning cookbooks that are available in order to gain a better understanding of how the HP-UX kernel works, and familiarize yourself with the applications you're running and then use that knowledge to better tune the system for your specific applications.  &lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;I'd also recommend checking with the application vendors to see if they have any specific tuning advice for their application running on whichever flavor of HP-UX you're going to use.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;One of the best documents I've seen in this area is written by Steven Ciullo and Doug Grumann.  Steven has been an HP-UX performance consultant for over a decade and he's worked on some of the nastiest performance hotsites around.  Doug Grumann works in the performance lab responsible for tools like Glance, MeasureWare, etc.  &lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;These two guys teamed up years ago and wrote a performance cookbook, which they've presented at HP World for many years.  They constantly update the cookbook as new OS releases and kernel features are made available.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;The latest version of the cookbook can be obtained by downloading the PDF from this site:&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;A href="http://h21007.www2.hp.com/dspp/files/unprotected/devresource/Docs/TechPapers/UXPerfCookBook.pdf" target="_blank"&gt;http://h21007.www2.hp.com/dspp/files/unprotected/devresource/Docs/TechPapers/UXPerfCookBook.pdf&lt;/A&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Again, this paper will not tell you that if you have an rp5470 running Oracle that you should set nfiles to 40,000, etc.  It will explain how the HP-UX kernel works and some of the most common knobs to turn in order to gain performance benefits for certain applications.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Good luck,&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Dave</description>
