Hi Tan,

You don't mention what kind of tape backup system you are using such as a DLT or HP units.

You will get those types of messages if you don't have the correct device drivers for the tape drive installed.

Have you been getting backups and where they off of this same unit?

DKD

Hi:

Either the tape, the state of the tape, or the tape drive can cause this failure:

1. Make sure the tape is write-enabled.
2. Clean the tape drive and try a new tape.
3. Make sure that the output of an ioscan shows that the tape device is "claimed":

# ioscan -fn -C tape

Does this help?

...JRF...

Is /dev/rmt/0m your backup device and is there a tape in the drive?

verify your tape drive dev file
# ioscan -fnCtape

Also verify that /dev/rmt/0m wasn't removed and replaced with a file called 0m. An 'll /dev/rmt/0m' should show a major and minor number, if not you could remove then recreate it with insf -e.

hope this helps.
-denver
Hi,

Another possible cause is that the tape drive you're using isn't supported by fbackup; I've seen this happen with dds4 tape drives. As far as I know, fbackup still does not support dds4 drives, if you use dds4 tapes (125m), but if you use dds3 tapes (120m), I'm told it works.

Bruce
