      <description>Hi,&lt;BR /&gt;This is the sequence of steps that I use to test a tape drive on an HP-UX 11i machine&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;1) ioscan -fnC tape&lt;BR /&gt;2) rmsf -H 0/12/0/../../..&lt;BR /&gt;3) insf -H 0/12/0/../../..&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;were performed. Verified 4) ioscan -fnC tape   and I could see the listing.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;# ioscan -fnC tape&lt;BR /&gt;Class     I  H/W Path    Driver  S/W State   H/W Type     Description&lt;BR /&gt;======================================================================&lt;BR /&gt;tape      0  14/0/3.0.0  stape   CLAIMED     DEVICE       HP      C5713A&lt;BR /&gt;                        /dev/rmt/0m            /dev/rmt/0mnb          /dev/rmt/c3t0d0BESTn   /dev/rmt/c3t0d0DDSb  &lt;BR /&gt;                        /dev/rmt/0mb           /dev/rmt/c3t0d0BEST    /dev/rmt/c3t0d0BESTnb  /dev/rmt/c3t0d0DDSn  &lt;BR /&gt;                        /dev/rmt/0mn           /dev/rmt/c3t0d0BESTb   /dev/rmt/c3t0d0DDS     /dev/rmt/c3t0d0DDSnb &lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;However, I issued tar cf /dev/rmt/0m /var&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;result:&lt;BR /&gt;# tar cf /dev/rmt/0m /var&lt;BR /&gt;tar: cannot open /dev/rmt/0m&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Also, &lt;BR /&gt;# mt -f /dev/rmt/0m rewind&lt;BR /&gt;/dev/rmt/0m: No such device or address&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;I issued:&lt;BR /&gt;# lssf /dev/rmt/0m&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;result:&lt;BR /&gt;#stape card instance 3 SCSI target 0 SCSI LUN 0 at&amp;amp;t best density available at address 14/0/3.0.0 /dev/rmt/0m&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Any ideas what's going wrong? Please suggest me some steps that test the tape. After testing is complete approx. 30GB data should be backed up into it.</description>

      <description>Stupid question, but is there a tape in the drive?  And is it write-protected?  &lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;The tar cf error could be either.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;mt rewind could be no tape.</description>

      <description>Kumar,&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;what i would suggest is to do rmsf on all unused speial files in /dev/rmt but be carefull and then execute insf -e. That thread addresses that there are 2 files accesing the same device.&lt;BR /&gt;That should create fresh and unique file for your tape device.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Hope that helps.&lt;BR /&gt;Regards,</description>
