Installing patch bundles ??

What is the general view on installing patches on HP Servers

In general, do you install the latest patch bundles when they are released or do install
patches as and when required...?!?!

A quality pack should be done proactively.

These bundles contain fixes to problems you may not yet have.

Better to have a planned downtime for patching than unexpected for faults.

Conservative says to load the penultimate bundle since by the time a new bundle comes out they know of any pproblems in the previous one.

We install patches based on our needs. For example before carrying out Oracle/ERP upgrades certain mimimum patches are required as recommended by Oracle/ERP vendor.

We also install patches based on HP recommendations due to performance/security related issues.

A gap of some period after a patch is relased always help.

We take a rather conservative approach. Call us ancient if you want, but we are still trying to roll out March 2003. Our productions systems are quite complex in their application layer that we must always be on the side of caution as we are a 24 x 7 operation.

In saying that there are always exceptions to the rule, especially where there are security related patches. We install them immediately on systems we have in our DMZ.

I create bundles every quarter, but the patches have to be out at least 90 days before it can be considered for the bundle. For example, I just created a bundle the other day that only includes patches up to and including March 2004. The only exception to this is any patches which are required due to urgent fix, or an application which requires it (very seldom). When doing an analysis using this web site, you can choose the conservative option and that will help you not get the latest and greatest (bleeding edge vs leading edge).

We install patches when there is a problem and then once a year during quarter one , as this is our quietest period.

We get this release specially from our HP rep , so we never use the CD's HP release. But patches more catered to our system needs.

We install QPKs twice a year and additionally, together with the QPK, install the patches which HP-UX Management Suite (B6834AA) requires ( http://software.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=B6834AA ).

I remember one or two cases when I had to install security patch according to an HP announcement.

Sometimes I have to install patches in order to resolve HW or SW problem on some machine( according to recommendation of HPUX support).
