Where does new user id come from

Just a quicky. Where is the next available uid pulled from during account creation?

I am merging two systems passwd files, and hacking any overlapping uid. I don't want subsequent regular account creation to overlap these numbers.

I could do with kicking the 'next user id' up a couple of thousand.

Chris -- Also keep in mind that you may have to change the actual ownership of the files.
