The archive python does not understand how to read the LIF (the boot area of the tape) therefore, you might be able to create the tape without error, but since it cannot read the LIF, you cannot boot from the tape.

Maybe It is trivial problem but I've not experience in HP-UX.
I prepared recovery tape (make_tape_recovery command) for HP-UX 11i v2 but I cannot to recover the system from the tape.
I have an external SCSI DDS tape - Archive Phyton 04106-xxx.
Make_tape_recovery command ended with succesfull.

Does make_tape_recovey create bootable tape with backup system and user data?
If yes, why I cannot to boot the system from the tape?.

A fter I try to boot the system from the tape I see some maessages:

Booting . . .

Boot IO Dependent Code (IODC) revision 1

From this moment nothing is happen.

When I stop the boot I see messages:

LED State Boot Failed. Running non-OS code

Do you know why I cannot load the HP-UX from the tape?

make_tape_recovery -A -x inc_entire=vgxx -d /dev/rmt/0m
(vgxx) replace xx with the volume group number.

will make you an ignite backup that would backup your system ,I'm not sure but I think the bckup tape might be corrupted.
make sure that the tape is configured well, and issue the following message.

#ioscan -fnC tape
using the root if the result shows your drive then it is well connected.
The Archive Python is the problem. That drive is not supported with Ignite and many other backup utilities, such as fbackup.

But I made recovery twice and each time on difrent tape. First time with -A option and second time with -x option.
I guess that the tape is connected well because I made recovery on that tape. It is the same tape!.
Than Why I cannot to recover the system?
Two more questions.
Whether the tape wrote on Phython Driver is bootable from equipment that understand LIF format?.
How check the bootable tape from the content and error side?.

Marco,

you say HP-UX 11i V2 (11.23) so this should be an Itanium machine? HP Integrity rx#### ?

Those cannot boot from tape.

You need to boot from DVD, if a tape drive is discovered after boot from install DVD you will see the option to recover from tape vs. fresh install from DVD. If it does not recognize the tape it will not give you the recover option.

Regards,
Bernhard
