Several times recently I have had a problem with HPDPS. lpstat will hang and users are unable to print. The first time it happened a 'pd stop' followed by a 'pd start' solved the problem.

This time, the pdstart would hang for several minutes before finally timing out. The contents of /var/opt/pd/pdclientd are:

Started basicdsd (pid 18249).
basicdsd server is listening for requests
waiting for basicdsd startup
cannot start basicdsd: timed out
basicdsd server is exiting

I removed basicdsd.db to make sure it wasn't corrupted and that didn't make any difference.

Nothing of any value in syslog.

Any idea on what might cause this error?

Thanks.
Hi Elliot,

Some HPDPS hangups are solved since PHCO_18230.

Latest superseeding patch is:
PHCO_21854 s700_800 11.00 HPDPS cumulative patch (for 11.0)
ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/hp-ux_patches/s700_800/11.X/PHCO_21854

for 10.20, patch is PHCO_21853
ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/hp-ux_patches/s700_800/10.X/PHCO_21853

Best regards,

Dan

Thanks Dan.

I should have mentioned in my original question that my plan is to install

PHCO_21853 - HPDPS cumulative patch and its dependency patch
PHCO_22364 - lp spooler cumulative patch

But I could find no reference to this particular problem in the patch description. I am not a big believer in 'throw the latest patches at a problem and hope it goes away' so I thought I would check to see if anyone had seen this before.

Alternatively, does anyone know of any debugging options or a log file for basicdsd?

Hi Elliot,

I had a similar problem once: this was caused by rpcd, which was not started during boot.

I found the solution by applying changes detailed in Doc ID A4733212 (retrieve it thru knowledge base). Don't forget to reboot after changes !

Best regards.

Fred.
