Alternate disk link error

Can anyone shed light on why this would happen.

We have an EMC arraythat we just phyically removed disks from. The changed was made in the EMC bin and all the other little things that need to be done (I hope). We are now getting alternate disk link errors for these disk. We have done ioscan on the server and those particular disks list NO HW.
ioscan results (brieviated):

disk 17 0/10/0/0.8.0.19.0.0.4 sdisk NO_HW DEVICE EMC SYMMETRIX

I am kinda in the dark on the Server/EMC handshake thing so I migh not be giving all the details needed. I need some insight on other things I can do to correct this. A reboot is almost out of the question because this is a critical SAP server.

Had that before, and I guess a reboot is a needed :-(

Hi
Your ioscan is showing the paths to these empty slots in your array and that there is no disk there.

You have removed the disks but the path will remain and so ioscan is correct.

What/where else are you seeing link errors?

Paula,

I knew that there was nothing wrong with ioscan ( it is reporting correctly). My question pertains to why are these paths still there if we have deconfigured in the EMC bin file and then done a subsequent ioscan. I guess I'm trying to say if these disks are gone as far as the EMC is reporting why is the server still trying to look for them?

Hi Carlos
I am not an expert in this area but would suggest that the EMC is correct in informing you that the paths exits and that no disks are there.
So it is not looking for the disks but just informing you that they are not there in the same way an ioscan will tell you that a lan card is there but not configured.

The EMC still has the devices at 0/10 and 0/8 (the controllers) and they are aware that 3 disks slots are available.

Hi Carlos,

Is an 'ioscan -fnC disk' still showing special files for the missing disks ?
In that case, you should use 'rmsf' to remove those.

As Paula said, the hardware path is still there because you have all the hardware but the disks. This is a perfectly correct output from ioscan.

Thanks all for the help, the solution was a combo of all the replies. I did the 'rmsf ' and a reboot. Low and Behold the problem was gone. So once again thanks all.
