Ignite-UX Question?

I have one problem.
I want to change two disk in my HP-UX 11.0 server for two bigger size. Could I do it with Ignite-UX. I want to do following. Make_tape_recovery with Ignite at my tape drive, then change disks and make recover. Will it works? Is there any troubles.

Hi,

I think it will work but you must be sure that you have included all directories you wanted. To do this use GUI menu command and -i make_tape_recovery option that will let you say what you want to include. Also you need to be SURE that make_tape_recovery ended without error and warnings!

I think that I need to configure this disk, i mean to create logical volumes and volume groups, or it will be done automatically

Hi,

Is it root disks ?

You restore in interactive mode and it will ask for volumes size. No need to create volumes in advance.

And one more question, If my system image is more than tape capacity, could I change it and proceed backup.

I think it is better for you to call HP support for help because this is a delicated situation that you have in hands and it should only be done by experienced people...

yes - make_tape_recovery has abilily to span multiple tapes.

Assuming both disks are in your root volume group, Ignite is exactly the way to do this. Even if the other disk is in a separate VG (as it should be if it contains user data, as opposed to system data), Ignite is still the way to go for at least the root VG. When you make your backup, use "make_tape_recovery -a /dev/rmt/_mn -I -v -x inc_entire=vg00". This will ensure that you get everything in vg00, not just the "essential" files. If it requires more than one tape, you will be prompted to insert another.

When you boot off the tape, the "-I" option of the backup command will cause you to be in interactive mode and you can size your logical volumes as you wish.

Now, there are a couple of ways to handle the second disk. If it is in a separate VG, you can add a "-x inc_entire=vg01" to your make_tape_recovery command and capture it that way. You can also use your regular backup (you do do a regular backup, don't you?). Simply run pvcreate, vgcreate, any lvcreates required and then restore from your backups. If the second disk is not in a separate VG, then it should be recovered when you restore your Ignite image.

you can always do:

/opt/ignite/bin/make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 -x inc_entire=vgxx -x inc_include= -v

Use preview option to know what it will result. It will span multiple tape volumes.
Take note that if you are backing up files saperately, ignite doesnt take care of links to the files. You have to mention links saperately to backup like above inc_include option.

Hi,
Yes it is work.
1. Make recovery tape with -I option and including all vgroups which are on the disk(s) you have to replace.
2. To be sure make a copy of the tape to another tape.
3. shutdown the server
4. replace the disk(s)
5. Start the server and interupt the boot
6. Insert the tape
7. Put SEA command ang wait for possible boot devices
8. enter command
boot P?
? - is appropriet number of tape device
9. Answer N for IPL
10. Wait until it boots and the user interface is shown
11. Select HP-UX-inatallation
12. If you want to change the filesystem size check the advanced mode -> go to Filesystem tab

After all it will start installation on the system and it will reboot by the istallation proces.

Just a little word of warning. Some tape drives are not bootable and you will need to boot from your hp-ux 11.0 install/update/recovery CD. This will detect that there is a tape drive attached to the system and give you the options of "Boot and install from CD" and "Boot from CD, install from tape". I have had to use this method once when I had to replace 2x 9Gb disks with 2x 36Gb disks and the only tape drive on the system was an Ultrium which was not bootable, so believe me I know that it works.
