I am attempting to install 64Bit 11i on an old D370 I have in the office.

I have recently upgraded the firmware to 42.11.

The support matrix states that 64Bit HPUX 11i is supported on this platform (although EISA cards only supported on 32Bit).

When I attempt to select the 64Bit version of the OS during an Ignite install - I get an error saying the firmware needs to be upgraded to support 64Bit!!

Does anyone have any suggestions - or is it the case the D370 will not run 64Bit 11i. (This machine USED to be a D270 and was upgraded to a 370 a while back.)

Grant,
What does the following show:
# model |wc -c

Both the D270 and the D370 are 32/64 bit compatible.

Also tell me more about that Ignite image you are using. It could be something wrong with that image.

Cheryl,

At the moment the system is down. I had a disk failure, so I was trying to ignite the box. I will put a 32Bit 11i onto it then get back to you on the model output.

The Image I'm installing from is actually the core depot I installed when I setup the Ignite environment. I've used this many times before for both 32/64 Bit on various platforms - so I'm pretty sure that the depot is not the problem here.

I've seen similar behavior where only 32-bit 11.x could be loaded when a systemboard was replaced and the HP Mr. Goodwrench used ssconfig to set the model string to 9000/XXX/d370 rather than 9000/XXX/D370. The install software was looking for an uppercase letter and not finding it only allowed 32-bit installs.

I've got a couple of HP engineers on site resolving a problem with one of our RP7410's, so I'll have a look and see if they can check this one out for me.

Clay that is exactly where I was going with this. Not only is there probably a mistake in the name (d370 vs D370) any extra space after the name and the install will barf.

Cheryl/Clay,

I think you're spot on with this one. Unfortunately the engineer's haven't brought a working SSCONFIG utility with them - but I've just ignited one of our other D370's (which was also upgraded from a D270) and 64Bit 11i has gone on that one fine.

I'll look at getting the other machine checked out next week. Thanks for your help.

The D-class computers do indeed require a firmware upgrade to support 64bit HP-UX. You can run cstm to see the current firmware revision:

echo "selclass qualifier cpu;info;wait;infolog" | /usr/sbin/cstm

Look for PDC Firmware Revision:

Just a note -
42.11 is the latest.

PF_CULU4211 HP 9000 Dx70/Dx80/R380 Firmware revision 42.11

And it seems to be already installed.
