I have done the upgrade in class.

The results were less than spectacular.

1) You must relink the applications after the upgrade.
2) You must install all required OS patches immediately after upgrade. That means the June 2004 set plus anything that http://metalink.oracle.com says you need.

HP-UX OS upgrade is a tricky process that is much harder when Oracle applications are involved.

We've always chosen the safe route which is to get new hardware install the OS cold and then install all of our applications one by one and get everything working. If money is tight, you can lease hardware for the job.

You need that lifeboat A. Clay speaks of. I'd make two copies of that make_tape_recovery tape. There is a measurable probability that you will need it,.

SEP

Greetings fellow admins;

My question is nothing new to most of you we are looking to upgrade 11.0 servers that have oracle 9.0.1, 9.2 instances, oracle apps, EMC software, etc. Wondering if anyone would be willing to share their upgrade procedure steps? I have seen the consenses is cold install, but would like to try upgrade if we get stuck then will go with cold install.

Thank you for insights and contributions.

wvsa

First make sure that you have a known good Ignite image (or a Lifeboat).

Before you go any further, look at the size of /stand and /. If you created them with default sizes then your upgrade is going to fail. If /stand is 160GB or so and / is about 180GB or so then you should be okay and the upgrade is straighforward. Because I always oversized /stand and /, I have yet to have an 11.0 to 11.11 upgrade fail.

You will almost certainly need to relink your Oracle executables.

My favorite way to do this is to have "Lifeboat" disks already made with your 11.0 system on them and should anything go wrong, it's trivially simple to slide the Lifeboat(s) into the boot slot(s) and be back up in minutes.

See attached.
For Oracle, your dba will have to re-link the binaries.

Rgds...Geoff
