I tried booting my server and it failed. It gave me the following error: "Boot IO Dependent Code
IPL error: bad LIF magic
Error reading IPL"

I tried it three time and thought it might be the disk drive so I got an ignite tape to restore it to another disk drive and received the same message. Not sure if it's something in the boot process.

Hi Ray,
Halt the server at PDC prompt. You will see the main menu prompt as below:

Main menu>

Here you type "sea ipl"

Main menu> sea ipl

This will list all the devices which are capable to boot your systems. If none of them is found then either the boot area on the disk/tape is bad or you may have connections problem.

Hope that helps.
Regards,
Hi,
Somethiong is wrong with your disk or with the section where is the IPL on that disk. Try to boot with ingnite tape. You can proceed with recovery if your disk is demaged, or you can interupt it and than copy LIF from tha tape to the boot disk, if your boot disk is OK.
Regards,
Borislav

From what you describe the disk is OK but the LIF area is missing or unrecognizable. You should run Recovery Shell from Install media and use Rcover an unbootable HP-UX system from that menu. You should put there the hardware path of the disk you are booting from. You can find that from the System recovery section in Ignite Administration manual.
More information would be helpful to diagnose the issue. Is this a first time installation? Do you have a working OS on the boot disk? Check and make sure that you have the right disk pointed for primary and alternate boot paths. Also try interrupting normal boot process and boot manually.
