I am receiving an error (see attachment) on an ioscan, is this a hardware or software (driver) problem ?

what options(s) of ioscan have you try ?
have you chech the install dir in /dev ?
any log of the install ?

Good Morning Stephen....stape is installed. If another driver is being used, I can't find which one. I can not find what drivers this uses anywhere on the site. Would the autoloader use stape or something else ?

It appears there is a driver missing from the kernel, hence it is unable to recognize the autochanger mechanism.
You do not say which version of HP-UX, nor what card this is connected to, so you will need to look at the various drivers that could be installed. If you have the schgr driver installed, this may cause a bit of cinfusion among the drivers, as that is for a MO device.

Stephen and Melvyn...schgr is in the driver list but its status is out and out. Is this the driver that is needed?

Melvyn...this is an rp2470, 11.11, and the card that the autoloader is on 0/6/2/0.0.0

If this missing a driver, what driver do I need and where can I get it?

The schgr and autox0 medium changer device drivers follow the SCSI specification for medium changer devices to provide a generic medium changer interface, making it feasible to construct an application level driver for any mechanical changer, jukebox, library, or autochanger device (MO, tape, CD-ROM).

However, the ssrfc module is provided specifically to support Hewlett-Packard magneto-optical disk autochanger products
