No, it is not safe to install any 11i binaries on an 11.0 box. If it works, it works by accident. It is perfectly safe to install 11.0 binaries on 11i. The code was inteneded to only be upwardly compatible. There are some minor exceptions where 11.0 code won't execute on 11.11 boxes but these are almost always kernel intrusive code (e.g. lsof).
Hi:

When looking for binary depots for open source tools in HP Porting and Archive Centre, I often find just the version for HP-UX 11iv1 (PA-RISC). Is it REALLY SAFE to install them in HP-UX 11.0 boxes? Some of them (openssh, for example) has no links to previous version with binary depot explicity compatible with 11.0. As you can see, I am avoiding compiling source code as much as I can. Any help is truly appreciated.

Hi,

It is not safe to install a product compiled for 11.11 on 11.0. either find a depot for 11.0 or compile from source.

Libraries and executables used to compile a product for 11.11 may not exist on 11.0 and your product may / will not work.

Hope this helps.

Regds
While 11i versions may sometimes work on 11.0 systems, I would say that would have to be the exception rather than the rule. It's called "upward compatibility", not downward!

Pete

Hi,

If you are looking for SSH, download and install SSH from hp software center. This is supported on 11.0 and it is built using openssh 3.9p1

http://software.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=T1471AA

Hope this helps.

Regds

That's funny. I complained for years that there were only 11.0 and Itanium binaries on the porting center. I think I actually talked to someone this fall that had a say in the matter, and the 11.11 binaries showed up, but 11.0 binaries went away.

Are you looking for anything in particular? (besides ssh?)

John

The porting archive doesn't even maintain 32-bit 11.11 packages anymore, which is almost as annoying as the suddenly dropped 10.20 packages.

By now I rather download gcc and friends from HP or TheWrittenWord and build the rest myself.

I need, by now: gcc, openssh, openssl, perl and zlib to complete a full HP-UX 11.00 binary depot bundle. I'm trying to get it in order to speed SSH install. The only (bit) problem with HP bundled Secure Shell is that it installs to /opt instead of standard GNU installation to /usr/local. Installation to /usr/local is highly desirable because we admin a lot of Linux server too, and this compatible configuration eases the work.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have run into very limited circumstances where third party vendors 11.00 apps did install and work properly in my 11i systems.

But in each case, I made the vendor state that fact via email or writing.

I've found that does not usually hold true with the archive and porting centre

SEP
