Dear All
i want to take your openian in the way i use to define my network printer(in this way it work perfectly without any trouble ,put i want to be sure)
1- go to sam -> printers and plutters -> hp destributed print service
2- i go to spooler and supervisor and create new supervisor and spooler
3- then i go to print que and define a que
4- go to logical printers and define a logical printer
5- go to physical printer and define the physical printer choosing the model and related tings

and so my printer will be defined and work proparly.so kindly your comment and if you can send me the most correct way to define each type of printers(local,network,remote).

Hi Fadia,

Before answering, I'll tell you what are the differences between local, network and remote printers:

local - directly connected to the server;

network - connect to the entire network (NT domain, etc...)

remote - already installed in another HP-UX server

Now, I do the following to install my printers (my printers are HP and network ones...):

SAM -> Printers and Plotters -> LP Spooler -> Printers and Plotters -> Add Network-Based Printer/Plotter -> Add Printer/Plotter Connected to HP JetDirect... ->

Here I enter into "JetDirect Printer Installer" select first option from menu and go one... If you don't have "JetDirect Printer Installer" you will enter in another similar menu from "JetAmin" I think...

hppi(1) hppi(1)

NAME
hppi - A printer configuration and diagnostics utility for managing HP
network printers

It is on /opt/hpnpl/bin

Also look at man hpnpadmin

These are simple tools and easier to use than via sam

hppi is menu driven

thanks to all
i want first to be sure that my procedure is correct.
then i want the procedure using sam ,and about the jetdirect how can i get the software of it ,i do not have it on my system

If all your printers use Jet Direct this is the way to go. But I believe if the print server is made by another manufacturer, you might need to set it up as a remote printer.

Very important: If your printer is not a HP LaserJet and but it is connected to the network, you need to add it as a "Remote Printer" in SAM. If the printer *IS* an HP LaserJet and it has an JetDirect LAN card, then in SAM you would choose Network Printer using JetDirect software. Unless your version of HP-UX is extremely old (more than 10 years), you have the JetDirect software installed and SAM will use it automatically.

If the printer is connected to a Windows box, you must enable Unix printer sharing on the Windows box, then add the printer as a "Remote Printer" in SAM. If your printer is an HP DeskJet, you'll need to post what model and how it is connected to your HP-UX system so we can advise you.

NOTE: If the printer is going to be defined as a "Remote Printer" because it is not HP, you must first contact the manufacturer to get the internal printer name(s) that are used by the LAN card. In SAM, you'll be asked for 3 names: local print queue, remote printer name or IP, remote printer name. The remote printer name cannot be skipped or guessed--it must be correct or nothing will print.
