I am thinking along the lines of Thayanidhi.
You mention server related tasks, but you never once said you zoned in your tape unit.

Check your zone and make sure you see it. And make sure your zone is active.

Rita

Hi,

I connected MSL5026 to M2402 router and then with fc cables, to SAN switch which a hpux is attached with.

I have 'stape' and 'sctl' driver in kernel, but #ioscan -fnC tape does not show anything.
I tried buildin 'tape2' but got below errs:

* The automatic 'backup' configuration has been updated.
* Building a new kernel for configuration 'nextboot'...
ld: Unsatisfied protected symbol "tape2_install" in file "/usr/conf/lib/li
sio.a[tape2.modmeta.o]"
1 errors.
ERROR: The kernel build did not succeed: ld: exit 1
The arguments that were supplied to the linker are the linker
are stored in file /stand/failure_ldargs.
NOTE: Due to the above failures, all changes that were being held
pending for next boot have been lost. The system will now
default to using the currently running configuration at next
boot.

my config is: HP L2000
HP-UX unknown B.11.23 U 9000/800 199971577 unlimited-user license

Does anyone know any more drivers I should use to let ux see that tape?
thx.
Tommy

Tommy -- The tape2 driver needs to be removed from the system file because it is no longer supported on 11.23 ...

Found a document which says in part:

When tape2 is removed from the system file, the kernel will
generate fine. The problem is that the HP-PB, HSC and EISA
bus types are no longer supported at 11.23, September 2004.
The tape2 driver is for devices on the HP-PB bus. Other drivers
that would cause problems are tape1 , disc1 , disc2 , disc3 ,
scsi1 , scsi2 , scsi3. Below is the section from the 0904
Release Notes.

Also check http://docs.hp.com/en/5990-8153/ch04s22.html for more
driver and card related information.

Lastly, do not use Sam to regenerate the kernel after the failure
because it has been changed significantly at 11.23 and can lead to
an unbootable system. Instead, generate the kernel manually.

ITRC document ID is KBRC00015948

Tommy,

Does the ioscan show anything at the address that you would expect the tape drive to be?

I assume the SAN switch itself is seeing the WWN of the router on the back of the tape device, and the port is up OK. Are you using soft or hard (port) zoning - might be worth checking that the zoning is correct (ie the HBA on the HPUX box is zone to the router).

T

Hi,
Follow the previous posts to solve your kernel problem. Then check the zone settings in SAN. Make sure your servers and tape library are in same zone.
Check the router (NSR) configuration and mapsettings. Generally you need to set map properly (the default doesn't work) to access from multiple systems.
I follow a simple rule that set indexed port0 map and autoassigned map as same. It could be different for your site!!

Regds
TT
