    <description>The fundamental difference is that in the vgexport/vgimport, you aren't really copying data but rather simply the metadata -- ie data that describes the disks. The vgexport/vgimport can be done in only seconds whereas a tar/cpio/frestore might take hours depending upon the volume of data.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;</description>

      <description>Hello, How is vgexport/vgimport different from a full filesystem backup using a backup tool? I've read some threads about coldinstall where they mention a filesystem backup as well as vgexport/vgimport non-vg00 filesystems ... Is it really necessary? Thanks in advance.</description>

      <description>Yes - vgexport doesn't really back up the data - only pointers to it...ie: logical volume info....for example - if you did a vgexport to a map file - then rm -rf all your files - when you did the vgimport - you would have no data - only empty filesystems...&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Rgds...Geoff</description>
