      <description>Hi,&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;   I am not able to login to my HP-UX 11i (Itanium) server neither from console nor thru telnet. It prompts for login &amp;amp; then trows error login incorrect as shown below,&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;HP-UX HP-IT4 B.11.23 U ia64 (ta)&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;login: root&lt;BR /&gt;Login incorrect&lt;BR /&gt;login:&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Please help ASAP &lt;BR /&gt;Thanks in advance.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Regards&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Walter</description>

      <description>So it's throwing you out without even asking for a password? Looks suspiciously as though /etc/passwd has gone missing.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;How recently have you logged in? If it was recent, what's changed? Do you have an ignite backup?&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Mark Syder (like the drink but spelt different)</description>

      <description>OUCH!&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Do you know of anyone currently logged in? If so try to get to a shell prompt and su up to root. Can you login as another user?&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;If not, then a hard reboot is necessary and then go into single user mode and fix the problem-&amp;gt; corrupted /etc/passwd file, /etc/securetty is wrong, account is disabled, ...&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;live free or die&lt;BR /&gt;harry d brown jr</description>

      <description>Looks like, there is a problem with /etc/passwd file. Can you login as normal user?? Check /etc/passwd file and it's perms.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;If nothing works, boot into single user mode and check passwd file.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Anil</description>

      <description>Hi All,&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;    Thanks for prompt reply.&lt;BR /&gt;   1)Even I am not able to login as normal user.&lt;BR /&gt;   2)Have hard booted the machine but it doesn't work.&lt;BR /&gt;   3) Now have booted machine thru CDROM &amp;amp; able to mount the /root.&lt;BR /&gt;   4) I have already tried coping /etc/passwd file of cdrom but it does not work.&lt;BR /&gt;   5) By chroot I am able to mount my original / partion &amp;amp; changed the root password with command passwd root . But this also does not worked.&lt;BR /&gt;   6) Note : I am not able to locate the /etc/securetty file. It's not there in /etc.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;  Please let me know what could be the problem.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Regards&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Walter</description>

      <description>can you check size / date on /usr/bin/login  ?&lt;BR /&gt;if it's corrupted, you can copy it from another system.</description>

      <description>Not having an /etc/securetty is a good thing (for now).&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Did you recently make this machine a trusted machine??&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;What changes have you made to this machine recently??&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Do you have an ignite backup (make_tape_recovery or make_net_recovery) of this system?&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;has login of root ever worked?       <description>Hi,&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;  1&amp;gt; There is no backup as this is test lab server.&lt;BR /&gt;  2&amp;gt; There is recently no changes made from system admin side but possibility of sombady may have run some test script.&lt;BR /&gt;  3&amp;gt; YES, I can able to login to this server using root &amp;amp; normal user till this incident notice &amp;amp; team member rebooted the server.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;thanks&lt;BR /&gt;Walter.</description>
